Provide researchers with the insight, knowledge, and tools
to write competitive research
grant proposals, and to inte-
grate external funding into their career planning

Target group

Researchers (PhD students, postdocs, assistant professors, lecturers, professors) with li-
mited experience with applying
for external research funding

• During the 2-day course, participants will acquire work-
able knowledge of processes
and tools through presenta-
tions and interactive exercises

• The major learning points will come from working with a research grant proposal, and follow the entire process from framing the project to funding decision. Participants are required to assess grant proposals under realistic conditions, and participate
in a mock review panel
meeting. This process also constitutes the main credit requirement of the course

• The participant’s experien-
ces will be reflected in presentations from expe-
rienced grant reviewers,
other exercises, and group discussions

• Overview of the Danish research funding system

• External funding and the academic career

• Knowledge of how to identify viable funding sources, e.g. by using ResearchProfessional

• Insight into how funders process grant proposals, and factors determining success or failure; the importance of evaluation criteria

• Framing the project for the specific funder and funding opportunity

• General structure of a research grant proposal and the purpose of its components

• Factors affecting the competitive edge of a proposal; pitching the content, communicating effectively, the importance of language and narrative structure

• Writing an effective proposal CV

• Costing a project and constructing a proposal budget; using SDU Budget Tool (SDU Budgetark)

• Insight through own experience into the mechanisms of grant proposal review and funding decisions

• Added benefit: participants' own project proposal significantly improved
